Other than the infamous brown, diesel, manual, rear-wheel drive, wagon, this place had nearly everything. It even had an NA Miata, that I accidentally forgot to take a picture of. Much more after the jump.
In the far away lands known as Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, lies a sleepy used car dealership, that used to be a do-it-yourself car wash. Upfront, there are not a lot of interesting cars. Pretty much your basic used car dealer: Corolla’s, Passat’s, Subaru Outback’s, F150’s, and so on. The norm. But while I was looking at a 2002 Subaru Outback 3.0, I saw something very bright, and very blue, out of the corner of my eye.
It was a Lancia Montecarlo.
I’m not sure what year it is, or which engine is in it (either a 1.8 liter or a 2.0 liter inline-4), bu I am certain on other things.
This is a USDM vehicle. The ugly 5-MPH bumpers, license plate surrounds, and amber front turn signals are dead giveaways.
It is in really bad shape. While it is in much better condition than other cars on the lot, it is still in a bad way. The front hood does not fit correctly, and there is a lot of the orange peel effect, and the interior is basically a parts bin.
This car was not originally blue. Why? Because Lancia never made the Montecarlo in this shade of blue. Whoever did repaint the car, did a very good job.
This was my main purpose of visiting !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! of Fuquay-Varina, NC. I wanted to see this car. Admittedly, this was not the first time I have seen this car. I saw it yesterday, when I was looking at the ‘02 Outback. But I went back for pictures.
Like I have already said, this place is Jalop heaven. Not one, but two Brat’s and two 2002’s. An Alfa Spider. Four Mercedes SL’s. A Volvo P1800. A Land Rover Series III. A Honda Z600. The list goes on, and on, and on.
Most of the Jalop-worthy cars are, sadly, not for sale. The P1800 is for sale, and is $5,800. As is the Karmann Ghia, which is $3,750, and the Mercedes 250S, which is $5,000. And it’s making me wonder what the Montecarlo and the nicer 2002 would go for, because I am in the market for a 2002, after all.
In a way, I wish that all of these cars were in much better shape, but I also feel that these cars are perfect just the way they are. They’re vintage, and they have a certain patina about them . I think they just work.
The only classic car upfront, was this 1967 Mercedes 250S. On the exterior, the car looked to be in really good shape. But the interior was not. The seats were tattered, and it smelled of urine. But it was a good deal, and I would be willing to take on the project.
On the way out, I noticed a lone vehicle parked in the woods. In a way, it looked sad. It looked as if it wanted to be on the road, and properly enjoyed. Or even better, going up a nice, muddy, hill. That’s because it was a Land Rover Series III. Offroad is the Land Rover’s natural habitat, and under a tree in Fuquay is not. I would not be surprised if this was a former MOD Rover, and it makes me wonder how it got here.
In the end, I would highly recommend going to this dealer to check this Jalop-tastic inventory out. I know that I will be going back, and I just might buy that ‘02 Outback.

Everything looks awesome!!! Good luck with the outback. Think you'd be able to drive it to the oppo meet?

Sadly, I have decided to pass on that Outback. After a closer inspection, I realized that the paint was two very different shades of green and an interior door pannel was in tatters for some reasons.
But after the purple 1974 BMW 2002 I'm looking at, a 2nd gen Outback is what I'm wanting to purchase. I'm specifically looking for green manuals, but I can't find any affordable ones in this area. But I shall not give up.

Good luck searching for a car. Is the BMW located in Apex, if so, I think I saw it last week parked in front of a business. Also, the North Carolina Subaru market absolutely sucks! You may have to go out of state to find the perfect one.
I’m going to send out a group email with an idea for something for us all to do in a few minutes, so be sure to check your inbox.

I will do exactly that. And yes, that is the car. It’s a faded purple/burgundy/surface rust. And NC’s Subaru market makes me want to cry. On the other hand, Washington State’s Subaru market is wonderful and prosperous, and my father (who lives out there) says he will ship me, “the perfect Outback,” if I ever find it. Very nice of him, indeed.

You probably should take him up on his offer.
Hell, it took me less than a minute to find your dream Outback on Seattle Craigslist. https://seattle.craigslist.org/see/cto/507391…
Also, yeah, that is the 2002 that I saw.

It’s perfect. Papers and everything. I will be telling my father about this. This is why I love Seattle Craigslist. Sees even a slough of old Subaru’s on there (BRAT’s, Loyale’s, XT’s, GL’s, etc.) and all priced dirt cheap.
I just love Seattle.

I don’t think this SIII is ex-MOD, partly because I’d expect different lights. If I had to guess, I’d say imported in the 90s or early 2ks, partly because the locking hubs are a kind that used to be commonly available *in the US market* and aren’t so much now, and it’s clearly an import otherwise.
